7-Segment Display Counter

The CD4017, combined with a 7-segment display, counts from 0 to 9 on each button press — a basic step toward any numeric display.

How to Build It

  1. Place the CD4017 counter chip on the breadboard.
  2. Connect a push button between the clock input pin (pin 14) and the positive rail, with a pull-down resistor to GND.
  3. Connect each decoded output of the CD4017 to a segment of the 7-segment display, through limiting resistors — a simplified decoding scheme approximates the digits.
  4. Power the circuit.
  5. Press the button repeatedly — the display should advance through different patterns on each press.
