Schmitt Trigger Square Wave Generator

A comparator with hysteresis (a Schmitt trigger) turns a slow, noisy waveform into a clean square wave — useful anywhere a signal needs "cleaning up" before entering a digital circuit.

How to Build It

  1. Place the LM358 op-amp on the breadboard, powered between the positive and negative rails.
  2. Connect a feedback resistor from the output (pin 1) back to the non-inverting input (pin 3) — this creates the hysteresis.
  3. Connect a capacitor and resistor in series from the output to the inverting input (pin 2) — this forms the RC oscillator.
  4. Connect an LED with a limiting resistor to the output, to visualize the switching.
  5. Power the circuit — the LED should blink at a steady rate, with sharp (not gradual) transitions.
