Battery Level Indicator (LED Bar)

An LM358 compared across several different thresholds lights progressively more LEDs as battery voltage rises — the simplified pattern behind any bar-style battery indicator.

How to Build It

  1. Place two LM358 op-amps (or one dual LM358, using both comparators) on the breadboard.
  2. Build a resistor voltage divider connected to the battery under test, with different thresholds tapped from different points.
  3. Connect each threshold to a comparator's non-inverting input.
  4. Connect a fixed reference voltage (from another point on the divider) to each comparator's inverting input.
  5. Connect each comparator's output to an LED, with a limiting resistor.
  6. Test with a fully charged battery, then a partially drained one — the number of lit LEDs should decrease.
