Coin-Cell LED Throwie — the Simplest Possible Project

Three parts, no soldering, no breadboard: a coin cell battery, a resistor, and an LED. The perfect project for a child, or for anyone holding an electronic component for the first time.

How to Build It

  1. Identify the LED's long leg (anode, +) and short leg (cathode, -).
  2. Connect the current-limiting resistor in series with the LED's long leg (twist the wires together).
  3. Press the resistor's other end against the coin cell's + side.
  4. Press the LED's short leg against the battery's - side.
  5. The LED should light immediately. Tape it together if you want it to stay lit.
